Day 6: Gods covenant with Abraham Genesis 15:1-21, 17: 1-8

Day 6: Gods covenant with Abraham Genesis 15:1-21, Genesis 17: 1-8

Belong
  • How does the passage help me know God better?
  • How does the passage help me understand how God expects me to live in relation with others?
The passage (15:1-21) tells how Abram was given a son but also was told that his descendants would be strangers in another country and would be mistreated for 400 years.

The second passage (17:1-8) tells how the covenant was fulfilled and abram became abraham and inherited the land of Canaan.

Believe
  • Try to know the Historical setting
  • Try to know the context
  • Try to know how that context fits into the rest of the  greater salvation story of the Bible
I also read Genesis 16 which tells how Abram's son was born from his wife, Sarai's servant Hagar.

Become
  • How can I apply what I have learnt today?

  • Write down your prayer as a response to what you learned through today's devotional reading.
Dear God, Our father
Forgive my sins, help me to understand your word and to live my life in your glory.
Help me to understand the passages I read and to understand how to apply them to my life and through this everyday become closer to you, to understand you more and to grow as a christian through this experience.
Thank you for all that you have given to me I pray in Jesus name, Amen.

Day 5: God calls Abram Genesis 11:27 - 12:9

The passage is about the account of Terah and his son Abram who was called by God to go to another land.

Belong
  • How does the passage help me know God better?
God called Abram to leave his fathers household, his country and his people and go to a land that God will show him.
I often hear about God calling people, this passage talks about Abram being led to carry out Gods work
  • How does the passage help me understand how God expects me to live in relation with others?
We should follow God, where he leads us to carry out his work.

Believe
  • Try to know the Historical setting
  • Try to know the context
  • Try to know how that context fits into the rest of the  greater salvation story of the Bible
Abram was the son of Terah who is a descendent of shem one of Noahs sons.

Become

Prayer
  • Write down your prayer as a response to what you learned through today's devotional reading.

Day 4: God's covenant with Noah Genesis 8:20 - 9:17

Day 4, I am actually a day late posting this.  I am not happy about missing a day so early on! But, while making my kids sleep I just crashed out...
My excuse is that I am still quite ill, feeling a bit better today though!

Day 4: God's covenant with Noah Genesis 8:20 - 9:17

One of my earlier questions about what we should eat is answered in today's passage,  God told Noah that ... "everything that moves shall be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything"  (Genesis 9:3).

Belong
  • How does the passage help me know God better?
God was pleased by the offering Noah gave him and therefore he rewarded him. (I find this question really difficult to answer!!!)
  • How does the passage help me understand how God expects me to live in relation with others?
It states in the passage that whoever shed the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed.  (Genesis 9:8). Again this passage is teaching right from wrong and also that Man should rule over all animals.

Believe
  • Try to know the Historical setting
This story is the beginning of the second creation all descendants of Noah and hish sons and their wives will populate the earth.
  • Try to know the context
The world became evil, much as it is today, no doubt. and God destroyed everything with the flood to wash the earth clean, except for those that he saved.
  • Try to know how that context fits into the rest of the  greater salvation story of the Bible

Become
  • How can I apply what I have learnt today?
Hmm, can I apply it?  I am not sure except that the passage again reinforces that god will reward those who sincerely follow his word.  That it is wrong to shed another mans blood..
 Prayer
  • Write down your prayer as a response to what you learned through today's devotional reading.
Dear God, our father
Please forgive me for my sins and help me to forgive those around me for their sins.
help me to understand the bible properly not only the words but the deeper meaning too.  I feel that I am so far from understanding you, guide me to find the answers to my questions and to help me to learn from this experience.
I pray in Jesus name. Amen.
